Poseidon, the Earth Shaker- the second Olympain
Poseidon was the god of the ocean. He is the second most powerful Olympian, after Zeus. Poseidon is sometimes referred to as the Earth-Shaker, for the important role he plays ion bringing about earthquakes. His weapon, the trident, is powerful enough to bring about these natural disasters. Whenever Poseidon is unhappy, he shows his distaste through earthquakes.
Poseidon is the husband of the sea-god Amphitrite. Amphitrite is the daughter of the previous ocean lord, Nereus. The two have a son, a merman, by the name of Triton.
Poseidon and Athena once went head to head in battle to become the patron of the city of Athens. If Poseidon had won this battle, Athens would be called Poseidons. Not a really catchy name. This wasn’t a war of physical prowess but rather a war of mental power. Poseidon created a salt water fountain, which wasn’t very useful, while Athena gave Greece the olive tree. Of course Athena won. Poseidon was a good sport, a true optimist. He left without any grudge against Athena.
